Planting Flower Bulbs Using Egg Cartons: A Simple Garden Trick for Perfect Rows

Ouadie RhabbouronJune 6, 2026

How the Egg Carton Trench Method Works

The principle is simple. Instead of placing bulbs individually into separate holes, dig one long trench and place cardboard egg cartons along the bottom.

Each cup becomes a planting spot, helping every bulb stay in place while maintaining equal spacing.

Basic Planting Steps

  • Dig a straight trench at the correct depth for your bulbs.
  • Place empty cardboard egg cartons in the bottom of the trench.
  • Set one bulb into each cup with the pointed end facing upward.
  • Cover the cartons and bulbs completely with soil.
  • Water thoroughly after planting.

Best Bulbs for This Method

This technique works well with many small and medium flowering bulbs, especially:

  • Tulips
  • Daffodils
  • Crocus
  • Hyacinths
  • Grape hyacinths
  • Snowdrops
  • Scilla
  • Anemone blanda
  • Iris reticulata
  • Freesia
  • Ranunculus

Large bulbs such as giant alliums or large decorative lilies usually need deeper planting and wider spacing, so they are better planted individually.
