Here’s What Your Stool Can Tell You About Your Health

Ouadie RhabbouronJuly 17, 2026

Black Stool

Black, tarry stool may indicate bleeding from the upper digestive tract and requires prompt medical attention. However, black stool can also occur after consuming iron supplements, bismuth-containing medications, or certain dark-colored foods. If the cause is uncertain, consult a healthcare professional.

Pencil-Thin Stool

Occasionally narrow stools are not unusual. However, consistently pencil-thin stools, especially when accompanied by bleeding, abdominal pain, or changes in bowel habits, should be medically evaluated to rule out narrowing or obstruction of the colon.

Small, Hard Stool

Hard, pellet-like stools commonly indicate constipation, often related to insufficient fiber, dehydration, or lack of physical activity.

Increasing dietary fiber, drinking enough water, and staying active may help improve bowel regularity.

Very Soft or Greasy Stool

Stools that are unusually greasy, difficult to flush, or stick to the toilet bowl may suggest that fats are not being absorbed properly. Various digestive conditions can contribute to this symptom, and persistent changes should be discussed with a healthcare provider.

Mucus in Stool

A small amount of mucus is normal. However, large amounts of mucus, particularly when accompanied by diarrhea, abdominal pain, or blood, may indicate inflammation or digestive disorders that require medical evaluation.

White Blood Cells in Stool

The presence of white blood cells in stool can occur with certain infections or inflammatory digestive conditions. Laboratory testing is needed to determine the underlying cause.

Strong Odor

Stool naturally has an unpleasant odor, but an unusually strong or persistent foul smell may occasionally be associated with dietary factors, medications, digestive infections, or conditions affecting nutrient absorption.

Floating Stool

Floating stool is often harmless and may simply contain more gas. However, if it frequently floats and is accompanied by a greasy appearance, foul odor, or unintended weight loss, it may warrant medical assessment.

Your bowel habits can also provide important health clues. Understanding what is normal for your body makes it easier to recognize changes that deserve attention.

Beyond appearance, the frequency and ease of your bowel movements can provide equally important clues about your digestive health.
