Stop Throwing Away That Oil Cap: It Actually Has a Genius Use

Ouadie RhabbouronJune 12, 2026

For years, I did the same thing without thinking.

Open a new bottle of oil…

Pull out that little plastic cap…

And toss it straight into the bin.

It always felt like an unnecessary piece—just something that got in the way when you were trying to pour.

But one day, a colleague pointed out something that completely changed how I use it.

That “useless” cap? It actually has a very practical purpose.

The Hidden Function of the Oil Cap

That small plastic insert is not only there to seal the bottle during transport.

On many oil bottles, it is designed to help regulate the flow of oil, making pouring easier and reducing the chances of using more than intended.

However, many people remove it and throw it away without realizing it may have another use.

How to Use It

If your bottle design allows it, you can try a simple trick that many home cooks find useful.

1. Remove It Carefully

When you first open the bottle, remove the plastic cap gently instead of immediately discarding it.

2. Flip It Upside Down

Turn the cap upside down and see whether it fits back into the bottle opening.

Some bottle designs are made so the insert can be reinserted in reverse, creating a narrower opening for pouring.

3. Use It as a Flow Restrictor

When it fits properly, the cap may help slow the flow of oil, giving you more control while pouring.

This can be useful when:

Adding oil to a frying pan

Dressing salads

Drizzling oil over vegetables or bread

Measuring smaller amounts more accurately

There’s another benefit many people notice after trying this simple adjustment—and it has nothing to do with cooking itself.
