10 Indicators of Blocked Arteries You Shouldn’t Ignore

Ouadie RhabbouronJune 23, 2026

4. Heart Palpitations or Irregular Heartbeat

Palpitations are sensations that the heart is racing, fluttering, pounding, or skipping beats.

Although many causes of palpitations are harmless, reduced blood flow and heart disease can sometimes affect the heart’s electrical system.

Seek medical attention if palpitations occur frequently or are accompanied by:

• Chest pain

• Dizziness

• Fainting

• Shortness of breath

5. Pain, Cramping, or Weakness in the Legs, Arms, or Jaw

Artery disease does not affect only the heart.

Plaque can develop throughout the circulatory system, reducing blood flow to the limbs and other body regions.

Some people experience cramping or aching in the calves, thighs, or hips during walking. The pain often improves with rest and returns during activity.

This condition is known as claudication and may indicate peripheral artery disease.

Discomfort in the jaw, neck, shoulders, or arms can also occur when the heart is not receiving adequate blood flow.

6. Dizziness or Lightheadedness

Feeling faint, unsteady, or dizzy may occur when the brain temporarily receives inadequate blood flow.

Although dizziness has many possible causes, recurring episodes should be discussed with a healthcare provider.

Pay particular attention if dizziness appears alongside:

• Vision changes

• Confusion

• Chest discomfort

• Weakness

7. Numbness, Tingling, or Cold Extremities

Poor circulation can reduce blood flow to the hands and feet.

Symptoms may include:

• Tingling sensations

• Numbness

• Cold fingers or toes

• Pale or bluish skin

In some cases, one limb may feel noticeably colder than the other.

Slow-healing wounds on the feet or legs may also indicate compromised circulation.

8. Erectile Dysfunction

In men, erectile dysfunction can sometimes be an early warning sign of vascular disease.

Healthy erections depend on adequate blood flow. Narrowed arteries in the pelvic region may interfere with this process.

Research has shown that erectile dysfunction may appear several years before other cardiovascular symptoms become obvious.

For this reason, it should be viewed as a potential circulatory issue rather than solely a sexual health concern.

Many people are surprised to learn that some warning signs feel more like digestive problems or swelling than heart-related symptoms.
