Proven Health Benefits of Eating Eggs Based on Evidence

Ouadie RhabbouronJune 26, 2026

Eggs have long been one of the most debated foods in nutrition. While concerns about cholesterol once led many people to limit egg consumption, modern research has shown that eggs can be part of a healthy diet for most people. Rich in high-quality protein, essential vitamins, minerals, and beneficial nutrients, eggs offer an impressive nutritional package in a relatively small serving.

Although eggs are not a miracle food, scientific evidence suggests they may support eye health, muscle maintenance, brain function, weight management, and overall nutrition when consumed as part of a balanced diet.

Eggs Are Extremely Nutritious

Eggs are among the most nutrient-dense foods available. A single large egg (about 50 grams) provides high-quality protein along with a wide range of vitamins and minerals.

A large egg typically contains:

• Vitamin A: approximately 5% of the daily value

• Vitamin D: approximately 10% of the daily value

• Vitamin B12: approximately 10% of the daily value

• Vitamin B6: approximately 5% of the daily value

• Selenium: approximately 28% of the daily value

• Phosphorus: approximately 9% of the daily value

• Riboflavin (Vitamin B2): approximately 15% of the daily value

Eggs also provide vitamin E, vitamin K, calcium, zinc, healthy fats, and about 6 grams of complete protein while containing only around 72 calories.

Because eggs naturally contain many essential nutrients, they are often considered one of the most complete whole foods available.

Eggs Promote Good Eye Health

Egg yolks are rich sources of the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, two carotenoids that accumulate in the retina and help protect the eyes from oxidative damage.

Research suggests that higher dietary intake of these nutrients may support long-term eye health and may help reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.

Studies have also shown that consuming whole eggs can significantly increase blood levels of lutein and zeaxanthin because the healthy fats in egg yolks improve their absorption.

Eggs are also an excellent source of vitamin A, which plays an essential role in maintaining normal vision.

Eggs May Support Weight Management

Despite containing fat, eggs can be a helpful food for people trying to manage their weight.

Their combination of protein and healthy fats helps increase satiety, allowing many people to feel full for longer after meals.

Several studies have found that people who eat eggs as part of a high-protein breakfast often consume fewer calories later in the day compared with those who eat breakfasts based primarily on refined carbohydrates.

Although eggs alone do not cause weight loss, they may support appetite control when included in an overall healthy eating plan.

Eggs provide much more than protein—their unique nutrient profile also supports healthy muscles, bones, and brain function throughout life.
